Coturnix Quail
Coturnix coturnix

This delightful bird is famous for its fast maturity and egg production.  The birds below, the LD1 Pharoah variety, matures at around 6 weeks and is usually laying eggs by the 8th week and often sooner.  These birds have a "tame" outlook to them and won't spook as easily as most quail do.  I can reach into these pens and pick up these birds with no trouble at all.  Many people use this type for pets as well as for meat production.  With their excellent egg laying and fertility rate its easy to raise multiple amounts of them in one season.  I often use the eggs for pickling purposes and they taste great (depending on your recipe).  The female is to the left and as you can see from the picture the male is to the right.  Vent sexing is most often done but you can easily tell the males by their "crowing".
